Socket weld pipe flanges are used on small-sized, high-pressure pipes. They are linked by inserting the pipe into the socket end, followed by applying fillet weld on the top. This enables a better flow and smooth bore of the gas or fluid inside the pipe. 

What is a Socket Weld flange?

Socket weld flange is a type of flange that is primarily used in high-pressure piping systems. In terms of static strength, they are equal to slip-on flanges, but they exceed in fatigue strength, which is 50 percent more than double-welded slip-on flanges. 

These flanges feature a one fillet weld outside the flange; however, it is essential to create a space between the fitting/pipe and the flange. When assembling the joint before welding, the pipe or tube should be inserted into the socket to the maximum depth and then pulled out 1.6mm away from the contact between the shoulder of the socket and the end of the pipe. 

Bottoming clearance is also required in a socket weld flange, usually because of reducing the residual stress, which might occur due to the solidification of the weld metal. 

Applications of socket weld flanges

As discussed before, socket weld flanges are used in high-pressure, small-size piping systems that do not transfer any corrosive fluids. 

Drawbacks

Socket weld flanges are subject to corrosion problems, primarily if corrosive products are being used in stainless steel pipes.
